Upcoming Virtual Event: Tackling the COVID-19 Pandemic in Rio de Janeiro’s Favelas: Integrating Communication, Surveillance and Health Care

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bozza developed an initiative to test, track and trace COVID-19 cases in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. With more than 2 million downloads and 450,000 free tests, the app “Dados do Bem” – Data for Good – is an integrative and participatory model for surveillance and health care for vulnerable communities.

The development of the app, and its rollout, helped to address research questions including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Brazilian health system, inequity in health care, and the evolution of nationwide mortality data.

Bozza is a Senior Scientist and Head of Critical Care at the National Institute of Infectious Disease Evandro Chagas, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Ministry of Health, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His research activities involve clinical and translational research on severe emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. In recent years, he also worked in the consolidation of new collaborative initiatives of clinical research in Brazil and Latin America to fill the gaps of knowledge regarding the management of critically ill patients in developing countries and the development of large multicenter clinical trials in these settings.
